At 12:35 hrs. Mt. Morris Fire Protection District received a report of a child and adult that had fallen into a well at 3679 N. Mt. Morris Rd. in rural Mt. Morris. Mt. Morris Fire arrived on scene at 12:39 hrs and determined that a 4-year-old female child had fallen into a cistern, not a well, when the lid to the cistern broke. The child’s 29-year-old father was near the child when the accident occurred and entered the 24” x 24” opening in the cistern to retrieve the child. The father was able to rapidly rescue the child and then handed the child to her mother who was still outside the cistern. Firefighters than established communications with the father and was able to determine he was standing in approximately 2 feet of water in the bottom of the 12 foot deep cistern. Fire Co’s were able to get a rope to the father. At that time firefighters placed a ladder in the cistern and were able to assist the father to the opening using the rope. Firefighters were then able to assist the father in exiting the cistern. The father was removed from the cistern at 12:56 hrs. Both the father and the child were evaluated by Mt. Morris Fire EMS and were determined to not have any life threatening injuries.
